Xavier Sabata

Catalan countertenor Xavier Sabata first trained as an actor before studying voice in Barcelona and Karlsruhe. He performs on the world’s leading stages, including Teatro Real Madrid, Liceu Barcelona, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Theater an der Wien, La Fenice, and the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Next season, he debuts at the Wiener Staatsoper as Ottone in L’incoronazione di Poppea. He was nominated for Best Male Artist at the International Opera Awards in 2019.

His repertoire ranges from Monteverdi and Cavalli to the great heroes of baroque opera seria and contemporary creation. Recent highlights include Rodelinda, L’incoronazione di Poppea, La Calisto, Handel’s Rinaldo, Agrippina, and the world premiere of L’enigma di Lea. He collaborates with ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Il Pomo d’Oro, Venice Baroque Orchestra, and Collegium 1704, and appears regularly at major venues and festivals including the Concertgebouw, Barbican Centre, Lincoln Center, Salzburg Festival, and Aix-en-Provence Festival.

His discography includes acclaimed recordings on Virgin Classics/EMI, Decca, Harmonia Mundi Iberica, and Aparté. Notable releases include Alessandro (11 international awards), Tamerlano, Bad Guys, I dilettanti, and his latest solo album Catharsis. Beyond opera, he is passionate about Lied and recently recorded Schubert’s Winterreise.
