Born in Nice in 1977, Alexis Kossenko is an artist of rare eclecticism, and today leads a rich dual career as conductor and solo flautist.
A graduate of the Paris Conservatoire in Alain Marion's class and winner of the 2000 Rampal Competition, he is an expert in all the historical forms of his instrument: he plays the modern flute as well as the baroque, classical and romantic flutes, and the recorder.
He appears as soloist with Deutsche Symphonie- Orchester Berlin, Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, Ensemble Matheus, Philharmonie der Nationen, La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, Stradivaria, Barokksolistene, B'Rock, Le Cercle de l'Harmonie, La Chambre Philharmonique, Modo Antiquo, Le Concert Lorrain, Holland Baroque Society, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, Gli Angeli, in a repertoire ranging from Vivaldi to Khachaturian, including Mozart concertos on tour with Emmanuel Krivine.
He has performed or conducted at the Berlin, Warsaw and Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestras, the Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Ton-Halle in Zurich, the Concertgebouw in Bruges and Amsterdam, and the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen. He was also 1st flutist with La Chambre Philharmonique (conductor: Emmanuel Krivine) and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées (conductor: Philippe Herreweghe).
As a soloist, he has recorded the 1st complete set of six concertos by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, concertos by Mozart, Telemann (Choc de Classica), Vivaldi (Editor's Choice de Gramophone), Tartini (Choc de Classica), Haydn, Touchemoulin, Nielsen. In chamber music, we should mention Telemann's complete Paris Quartets, the Carnival of the Animals, Undine (works by Reinecke and Andersen with pianist Vassilis Varvaresos); Soir Païen, a disc of Impressionist melodies for voice, flute and piano (Debussy, Ravel, Koechlin, Caplet, Ibert, Roussel) with Anna Reinhold, Sabine Devieilhe and Emmanuel Olivier (Aparté); and a 4-CD box set of works by Eugène Walckiers released in January 2023, awarded a Choc Classica and a Diapason Découverte.
As a conductor, Alexis Kossenko has been invited to lead numerous ensembles, both modern and specialising in early music: European Baroque Orchestra, B'Rock, Le Concert d'Astrée, Holland Baroque, Arte dei Suonatori, {oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna, Sinfonia Iuventus, Concerto Copenhagen, Ensemble Resonanz, Ensemble Arion, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, JOA, Oldenburg Staadtstheaterorchester, as well as Les Ambassadeurs, of which he is founder and principal conductor.
His experience in a particularly wide repertoire means that he is equally at home in the symphonic repertoire: Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Reinecke, Brahms, etc.; and in opera: Purcell's The Fairy Queen, Lully's Atys, Handel's Tamerlano, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Cosi fan tutte, Chabrier's L'Étoile, and Britten's The Rape of Lucretia. A member of the Honorary Committee of the Société Jean-Philippe Rameau, he is renowned for his work on this composer, conducting Achante et Céphise, Zoroastre (each of which won a Diapason d'Or), Platée, Les Paladins, Les Boréades and Anacréon.
After the death of Jean-Claude Malgoire, Alexis Kossenko was appointed musical director of La Grande Écurie and La Chambre du Roy, whose destiny he decided to unite with that of Les Ambassadeurs to design rich and ambitious musical projects, from Monteverdi to Schönberg.
