Every appearance by Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset leaves an unforgettable impression on those lucky enough to hear them on stage together. Long-time partners, they are reunited for the first time on record around a composer for whom they have a veritable cult: the mysterious Forqueray. Antoine Forqueray, born in Paris in 1672, is, along with Marin Marais, one of the greatest violinists of all time. His sulphurous life has given rise to many legends. Famous for his virtuoso improvisations, he never published any of his three hundred or so pieces and died in 1745 in Mantes. Apart from a few handwritten pieces copied from collections by various authors, Forqueray's pieces have been lost. The publication of the Pièces de viole, to which the present recording is devoted, thus remains the only significant record of his work.
