Ensemble Aedes · Mathieu Romano

Founded in 2005 by Mathieu Romano, Aedes is the fruit of a human adventure: loyal to the ensemble, the singers share with their conductor the same fervour for the choral art that they serve at the highest level.
The ensemble explores every era, from baroque music to a cappella works from the 20th and 21st centuries, right through to contemporary works. It distinguishes itself through original programmes in the form of staged performances, collaborations with artists from different worlds (dance, theatre, visual arts, etc.) and forays into other musical genres such as French chanson and flamenco.
Following on from its Lamento programme with the cantaora Rocío Márquez, for the 2024-2025 season Aedes is inviting the master Masato Matsuura, theatre actor nō.
Gifted with great stage presence, Aedes is acclaimed and regularly invited as an opera choir on France's finest opera stages. The ensemble performs in many prestigious venues such as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Opéra Comique, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Opéra de Paris, the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Palais de Chaillot. He has taken part in festivals such as Aix-en-Provence, La Chaise-Dieu, Besançon, Radio France Montpellier and the Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay. He has appeared on European stages in Vienna (Konzerthaus), Amsterdam, Krakow and Granada (Festival International de Musique et de Danse).
Committed to promoting choral singing everywhere and for everyone, the Aedes ensemble also performs in the regions. It has devised a wide range of programmes designed to bring together music lovers of all levels.
Twentieth-century music and contemporary creation play an essential role in the ensemble's activities. Its rich discography devoted to the sacred and secular a cappella repertoire of this period has been enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike.
The ensemble collaborates with renowned ensembles performing masterpieces of the vocal and instrumental repertoire (Les Siècles, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Latvian Radio Choir, etc.).
It promotes the development of choral singing by organising an annual season of cultural events. From the 2022-2023 season, the Aedes ensemble will set up at the Abbey of Saint-Riquier in the Hauts-de-France region to create a Pôle Régional d'Art Vocal, in partnership with the Département of the Somme.
