Fanny & Felix
Lina Tur Bonet, Orchestre de chambre de Toulouse
AP407 - 1CD - Sep 5, 2025

A youthful concerto by Felix Mendelssohn in two versions – one of them completely unpublished: this is what violinist Lina Tur Bonet offers here, in a dialogue with Fanny’s sublime Quartet, thus highlighting the parallel, intertwined, yet so different destinies of the Mendelssohn siblings.

Lina Tur Bonet, concertmaster of Jordi Savall’s Le Concert des Nations, has repeatedly demonstrated her curiosity for rare or long-lost scores… This new recording, devoted to the parallel paths of the Mendelssohn siblings, is no exception!

On one side, Felix Mendelssohn, the celebrated prodigy who, at the age of thirteen, composed his Violin Concerto in D minor. Lina Tur Bonet has unearthed the original, previously unpublished version of the work, and presents it here in a world premiere alongside the final version. Her fiery playing brings out the extraordinary creative energy that Felix would continue to cultivate throughout his life.

On the other side, Fanny Mendelssohn, a prodigy constrained by her time, was one of the first women to compose a string quartet. At twenty-nine, she boldly embraced this most serious of genres, displaying remarkable freedom and formal audacity. Her music flows with raw expressiveness – by turns tender, anxious, or impassioned – which Lina Tur Bonet captures vividly alongside the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra.
