"Boundless: that’s how one might describe these sonatas by Prokofiev, Weinberg, Bernstein and Poulenc. All of them, except the one by Poulenc, were composed during the Second World War, a fact that is worth noting, given their great virtuosity, each one exploring in a different way the boundaries of the genre. While Weinberg draws on klezmer, the music of his childhood, and Bernstein on jazz, Prokofiev, like Poulenc, chooses a classical language, treated with great freedom. Prokofiev’s famous Flute Sonata in D, which appealed so immediately to the violinist David Oistrakh, is presented here in a new transcription for clarinet.

"Sans limites : c’est ainsi que l’on pourrait qualifier ces sonates de Prokofiev, Weinberg, Bernstein et Poulenc. Cette dernière mise à part, ces œuvres sont toutes composées durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, un contexte qui n’est pas à négliger au regard de leur grande virtuosité, chacune explorant, à sa manière, les limites du genre. Si Weinberg puise dans le klezmer – la musique de son enfance – et Bernstein dans le jazz, Prokofiev, tout comme Poulenc, s’appuie sur le langage classique, avec une grande liberté. Sa célèbre sonate pour flûte, pour laquelle David Oïstrakh avait eu un coup de foudre, est ici présentée dans une transcription inédite pour clarinette.
